April 15th, 1959
UGITE Gas Incorporated acquired McNay Gas Corporation, operating as Ward Bottle Gas, in Ephrata, PA marking the company’s first venture in the propane market.
UGITE was in 35 locations in eight states selling not only propane, but welding supplies at some of its offices in northwestern Pennsylvania and West Virginia.
UGITE acquired SEC Corp. of El Paso, Texas, a producer and distributor of carbon dioxide and other gases in 16 states, and established a dioxide division. The same year, AmeriGas was established as a subsidiary of UGI, replacing UGITE.
UGI and Prudential Insurance form a joint venture and the AmeriGas LP Gas Division becomes A.P. Propane.
June 1987
AmeriGas (still as A.P. Propane) acquired Cal Gas and instantly became the fourth largest propane marketer in the United States. For the first time, AmeriGas had a coast-to-coast presence.
AmeriGas bought back Prudential’s stake in A.P. Propane and formed AmeriGas Propane, which became a wholly owned subsidiary of UGI Corporation the following year.
UGI completed the acquisition of Petrolane Inc., one of the nation’s largest propane marketers, and combined Petrolane with AmeriGas into a partnership called AmeriGas Partners, L.P., the nation’s largest propane company.
AmeriGas began a pre-filled propane exchange business out of southern California called Amerigas PPX, the predecessor to Amerigas Cylinder Exchange.
AmeriGas acquires Heritage Propane for $2.6 billion.
